Summary

Librarian's note: See alternate cover editions for this ISBN here and here and here and here

When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder― much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons。 Then the body disappears into thin air。 It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing―not even a smear of blood―to show that a boy has died。 Or was he a boy?

This is Clary's first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons。 It's also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk。 Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace's world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon。 But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know。。。

Exotic and gritty, exhilarating and utterly gripping, Cassandra Clare's ferociously entertaining fantasy takes readers on a wild ride that they will never want to end。

This isn’t exactly great literature - not that it pretends to be - and the endless and often ridiculous (at times nonsensical) descriptions and comparisons are best skipped, but that said, I was virtually incapable of putting it down。 On to City of Ashes!

3。5-4 stars。 Honestly based on how some people talk about this series, I expected to not enjoy this book。 This was actually a fun read! I mean, sure, clary and jace are annoying, but it’s still an interesting universe。

Yet another DNF。 This book might seriously be in the top 3 worst books I've ever read。 Trite, painfully predictable and horribly written (some of the sentences literally make no sense)。 I'm at a complete loss as to how it has a rating higher than 1。 Yet another DNF。 This book might seriously be in the top 3 worst books I've ever read。 Trite, painfully predictable and horribly written (some of the sentences literally make no sense)。 I'm at a complete loss as to how it has a rating higher than 1。 。。。more

I would have adored this book when I was a teenager。 I would have been obsessed I can tell you that *right* now。As an adult。 It was fine。I loved the idea of a world inhabited by the offspring of angels and demons and that accounts for all myths and legends ever told。Has a big Supernatural post-season4 vibe。I found the characters a little wooden。 I thought that Clary accepted the new world order surprisingly easily。 The dialogue didn't often match the mood - it was necessary for CC to state when I would have adored this book when I was a teenager。 I would have been obsessed I can tell you that *right* now。As an adult。 It was fine。I loved the idea of a world inhabited by the offspring of angels and demons and that accounts for all myths and legends ever told。Has a big Supernatural post-season4 vibe。I found the characters a little wooden。 I thought that Clary accepted the new world order surprisingly easily。 The dialogue didn't often match the mood - it was necessary for CC to state when people were upset or sad。 Also Clary forgets her mother is in mortal danger for the *vast* majority of the book and it means you end up not caring loads about what happens to her。 Especially as you don't get a bunch of back story about why we like her in the first place。Simon is an ace character as is Jace and Alec。 Everyone else 🤷‍♀️ 。。。more

City of Bones: 4 Stars[6。43 - really great。]This was such a nice reread。 I definitely enjoyed it more this time around because I adored the characters from the getgo (when I first read the series it took me 2-3 books to truly fall in love with them)。 A very solid start to a series that I think get's even better with time。 I can't wait until we get all the different POVs - rather than mostly Clary。Alec is still the obvious fave。 Simon is second and Clary is third? DNF'ed at p。 92I really tried getting into it but I don't feel attached to any of the characters or the story。 I also felt myself slipping into a slump reading this, and I do not want to force myself to keep reading if that would continue to be the case。 DNF'ed at p。 92I really tried getting into it but I don't feel attached to any of the characters or the story。 I also felt myself slipping into a slump reading this, and I do not want to force myself to keep reading if that would continue to be the case。 。。。more

I literally have no idea how to describe the ending, I was laughing, crying, cringing and wanting to throw up the entire time。 It is a very interesting book and I was never really bored when reading it。 The writing is a little cringe sometimes but the plot is really good。 I definitely recommend it but it’s also a little hard to follow sometimes。 If you like books that have a huge plot twist at the end you definitely will not be disappointed with this one😳。

Where do I even begin? I usually don’t like reading super popular books, not because of any kind of superiority complex I have toward reading well-known books, but because I never really feel like books live up to the hype。 Unfortunately, that was the case with this book。 The writing was just awful。 It seemed like Clare tried to shove every single YA cliche into a book: love triangle with childhood best friend (come on now。 We all know the childhood best friend never wins), the “bad boy” love in Where do I even begin? The overly-descriptive writing!! And not only does she use a lot of similes, some of them are questionable: “the walls shown bright as enamel” Her writing seems so forced。 The conversations between the characters don’t seem natural。 I felt like I was reading something off wattpad。 I wanted so badly to like this book。 The premise was interesting, but there were a lot of plot holes。 What was Simon’s purpose for being there? Why were Simon and Clary so accepting of the world? Why was Jace so quick to like Clary? Also, Clare tried way to hard to paint Hodge as a Dumbledoresque character and she failed miserably。 Hodge was cheesy at best。 。。。more
